CPS Announces New Vending Policy
April 20, 2004, students in the Chicago Public Schools will find much more nutritious offerings in their school vending machines when they come back to school in the fall.
The CPS is in the process of revamping its vending-machine programs for snacks and beverages in order to combat one of the causes of obesity.
The CPS is setting a new policy that will take effect next school year, that only allows school vending machines to sell the following types of beverages:
- In elementary schools, juices containing 100% fruit juice, and in high schools, juices containing no less than 50% fruit juice.
- Water
- Non-carbonated sports drinks
The CPS has also developed a new policy on snack vending machines. There will be the following restrictions on the types of snack products offered in the vending machines:
- Snacks may have no more than 30% calories from fat
- Snacks may have no more than 40% sugar by weight
- No candy or chewing gum
To further combat the causes of childhood obesity, the CPS Bureau of Food Services has worked with HSC to establish a task force to set up educational programs designed to educate parents on the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise for their children. The task force is scheduled to hold its first meeting on May 11. (CPS Web site)

Springfield Report - Healthy Foods, Healthy Buses
HSC has partnered with numerous health groups to pursue legislation that supports healthy food alternatives in school vending machines. Representative David Miller and Representative Tom Cross both sponsored bills to remove soda and junk food from vending machines and replace them with healthier choices. The soda industry has lead fierce opposition to this legislation and managed to kill Representative Miller's bill. HSC is currently working with Tom Cross' staff to better position his bill and to promote a grassroots outreach that supports healthy school food environments.
HSC has also partnered with the American Lung Association to help clean up diesel school buses. Representative Sandra Pihos has sponsored our bill to limit the time a diesel school bus can idle in front of a school building. Under the recommendations of the Education Committee, HSC will continue work with Representative Pihos to create a House Resolution recommending idling limits and further support this bill in the next legislative session.

Bush Administration Given "F" on Their Record for Protecting Children from Environmental Exposures
A report released by the Children's Environmental Health Network was unable to give a grade higher than a "C" to the Bush Administration in any of the 16 different areas it investigated, such as air quality, pesticides, and mercury. In 11 areas, the report's expert reviewers found that the current Administration's decisions merited an "F," including water quality, toxic substances and wastes, and right-to-know. Five sections received a "C" which includes their performance on school environmental health. For more information, Click Here.
