Students Get Involved to Preserve School Buildings, Improve School Food
At HSC, we believe that all members of the school community should have a voice in the decisions that shape the school environment. Perhaps no voice is more vital than that of the students whose health is affected so directly by those decisions. We’re pleased to announce two programs highlighting the critical role that students can play by raising their voices – and bringing their remarkable talents – to advocate for environmental health and wellness at school.
Lunch & Learn: Lunch & Learn: Education, Equality and Our Environment
July 15, 2008 ~ 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
This event will feature the work of Critical Exposure, an organization that empowers young people to develop skills as documentary photographers. Students photograph the conditions of their school buildings, both the things that make them proud and the things they wish they could change. Through students’ powerful photography, Critical Exposure shows policy makers and community members the reality that students face every day.

Second Annual Cooking up Change Healthy Cooking Contest
Cooking up Change ~ Oct. 23
Preparations are underway for the second annual Cooking up Change Healthy Cooking Contest, featuring the incredible talents of high school students studying culinary arts through the Chicago Public Schools Education to Careers program. Through the contest, which will take place at HSC's annual benefit, students compete in teams to create a healthy school meal that meets high standards for nutrition while sticking to a stringent budget. Last year’s winning school lunch was served twice in high schools around the city of Chicago. Stay posted for more details on this exciting culinary competition.
How are students in your community engaged in school health issues? We’d love to hear about the impressive work that students are doing in your neighborhood!
