School Nurse Leadership Training in National Spotlight
Training Prepares Nurses to Create Change for School Health
Since HSC began providing school nurse leadership training in 2006, 67 nurses representing more than 225 schools have graduated from the intensive three-part training on leadership and school health.

The training is presented as a partnership between HSC, the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Nursing and National Louis University, making it a uniquely effective model that has attracted national attention from nursing and public health leaders interested in providing leadership training to school nurses.
Sessions focus on school wellness or environmental health, with an emphasis on strategies for creating informed, research-based change in schools. Ninety-seven percent of participants report improvement in their leadership skills, and similar numbers of participants report that the training helped them create change in their schools.
Project director Donna Fishman and HSC board member Martha Bergren delivered a presentation about the program to a packed room at the National Association of School Nurses conference in Albuquerque in June, and shared information with hundreds of other nurses at the HSC booth.
Next, HSC is launching a School Nurse Leadership Training program in Oct. 2008 tailored specifically to the needs of certified school nurses in the Chicago Public Schools system. The training kicked off this week with a special session for nursing managers.

| "I ran my first Chicago Marathon 20 years ago. 1988 was a milestone year. I got married, and ran my personal best marathon! Of course, I never considered that it would be my fastest marathon for all time. Throughout my twenties and then my thirties, I assumed I could run that 26.2 miles just a little faster. It’s amazing the perspective your forties bring.
Over the years, I traded in all those running hours for volunteer hours and have been active with the boys’ schools over the past few years. I’ve climbed the volunteer ladder, and this year will proudly be co-president of the Kingsley School PTA. While doing research for this event and the upcoming year, a friend forwarded me a link to the Healthy Schools Campaign website. “Clean Environment, Healthy Children, Better Education,” was at the top of the page. Everything we’re striving for! And in the middle of the page, “Run for Healthy Schools…register today.” Before I really knew what I was doing, I had joined the Healthy Schools Campaign Team and registered to run the Chicago marathon. What better way to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of my first Chicago marathon than by running one more time to raise money and awareness for Healthy Schools Campaign. So I’m back on the road running those long miles and loving it! I’m not chasing that personal record, not thinking about losing weight -- I am running with the number one motivation of benefiting our children.
Over the past 20 years, it is the best reason I’ve ever had for running a marathon." Anne Honzel, Evanston Ill. Read Anne’s entry on the HSC blog or support her run » |
