School Nurse Leadership Training in National Spotlight
Training Prepares Nurses to Create Change for School Health

Since HSC began providing school nurse leadership training in 2006, 67 nurses representing more than 225 schools have graduated from the intensive three-part training on leadership and school health.
Graduates of the school nurse leadership program environmental health training in Springfield, Ill.

The training is presented as a partnership between HSC, the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Nursing and National Louis University, making it a uniquely effective model that has attracted national attention from nursing and public health leaders interested in providing leadership training to school nurses.

Sessions focus on school wellness or environmental health, with an emphasis on strategies for creating informed, research-based change in schools. Ninety-seven percent of participants report improvement in their leadership skills, and similar numbers of participants report that the training helped them create change in their schools.

Project director Donna Fishman and HSC board member Martha Bergren delivered a presentation about the program to a packed room at the National Association of School Nurses conference in Albuquerque in June, and shared information with hundreds of other nurses at the HSC booth.

Next, HSC is launching a School Nurse Leadership Training program in Oct. 2008 tailored specifically to the needs of certified school nurses in the Chicago Public Schools system. The training kicked off this week with a special session for nursing managers.

Meet the HSC Marathon Team

HSC's team running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is taking great steps forward on training and fundraising for this world-class athletic event. You can be part of this remarkable effort by joining or supporting the HSC team!

HSC also has a limited number of bibs available for the ING New York City marathon, with no lottery required! To learn more, contact Allison Krass at 312-560-4994.

In each newsletter, we'll introduce another member of our team:

"I ran my first Chicago Marathon 20 years ago. 1988 was a milestone year. I got married, and ran my personal best marathon! Of course, I never considered that it would be my fastest marathon for all time. Throughout my twenties and then my thirties, I assumed I could run that 26.2 miles just a little faster. It’s amazing the perspective your forties bring.

Over the years, I traded in all those running hours for volunteer hours and have been active with the boys’ schools over the past few years. I’ve climbed the volunteer ladder, and this year will proudly be co-president of the Kingsley School PTA.

While doing research for this event and the upcoming year, a friend forwarded me a link to the Healthy Schools Campaign website. “Clean Environment, Healthy Children, Better Education,” was at the top of the page. Everything we’re striving for! And in the middle of the page, “Run for Healthy Schools…register today.” Before I really knew what I was doing, I had joined the Healthy Schools Campaign Team and registered to run the Chicago marathon.

What better way to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of my first Chicago marathon than by running one more time to raise money and awareness for Healthy Schools Campaign.

So I’m back on the road running those long miles and loving it! I’m not chasing that personal record, not thinking about losing weight -- I am running with the number one motivation of benefiting our children.

Over the past 20 years, it is the best reason I’ve ever had for running a marathon."

Anne Honzel, Evanston Ill.

Principals Discuss School Wellness Research and Strategies

A CPS school administrator chats with HSC board member Phyllis Pelt (right) after the Lunch & Learn

Twenty-five principals and 12 assistant principals gathered on July 15 at HSC’s Lunch & Learn event on school wellness to hear from leaders in the education community about the latest research and strategies for making healthy food and physical activity part of the school day.

As principals are ultimately responsible for implementing the district’s wellness policy, HSC has launched the Principals for Healthy Schools project to focus on providing assistance to principals at an individual school level. With the project, HSC is tapping into the expertise of experienced principals to create a climate in which school administrators take an active role in making wellness a key part of every child’s education.

Principals consistently report that competing priorities can make it difficult to focus on wellness, but that the need is great. As one attendee explained, “I signed up because health is of interest to me -- but more importantly because our students are so out of breath after walking up three flights of stairs.”

HSC Event Brings Together Student Voices, Historic Preservation

Renovation of existing school buildings meets critical needs for students and for our environment while helping preserve urban vitality and very high-quality school buildings that in many cases are actually valuable historic artifacts.

Royce Yeater of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Adam Levener of Critical Exposure brought perspectives on equality, environmental responsibility and students’ need for quality educational facilities to a discussion of school renovation at HSC’s Lunch & Learn on July 15.

The event included students’ documentary photos of their school buildings – many in desperate need of repair – and discussions of recent steps forward in the fight for equitable and adequate school facilities funding.

Kids' Healthy Eating Habits Begin With Parents (But Don't Skip the Birthday Cake)| by Mark Bishop
As parents we have the power to teach our kids healthy eating habits. Last weekend I was preparing food for my son's second birthday. On the menu were three salads: a roasted veggie and bean salad, a grilled barbecued chicken salad and a mixed green salad with corn bread croutons. It was all delicious, in my humble opinion. And of course there was birthday cake afterward -- what's a birthday party without birthday cake?. . . . Read more
