Change the Future of School Food
Raise your voice for a healthy reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act

The Child Nutrition Act – the federal legislation that, along with the farm bill, essentially determines school food policy and resources – will begin reauthorization in 2009. The 2009 reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act offers a tremendous opportunity to create a future for school food in which fresh, healthy meals are the norm and all children have access to the type of comprehensive nutrition education that creates healthy habits for a lifetime.

As 2009 quickly approaches, the USDA is seeking input from members of the school community for help in shaping the act’s priorities. Please join us in raising your voice for a healthy reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

You can also help spread the word by adding a badge to your website, getting our child nutrition widget with direct feeds from the Healthy Schools blog, and telling your friends and colleagues about the campaign!

To take advantage of the opportunity offered by reauthorization, HSC is partnering with Applegate Farms to raise awareness of the challenges surrounding school food and to encourage parents, students and members of the school community to raise their voices in support of healthy school food.

Applegate Farms is the presenting sponsor of the Cooking up Change Healthy Cooking Contest, an event that helps bring attention to the many constraints involved in serving fresh, healthy food at school.

Plus: When you send a letter to the USDA or sign up for Child Nutrition Act updates, you'll receive a coupon for $1.00 off your next purchase from Applegate Farms!

Meet the HSC Marathon Team
Runners raise funds for HSC while preparing for Chicago and New York races

Runners on HSC's charity athletics team are taking great steps forward in training and fundraising for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and ING New York City Marathon. You can be part of this remarkable effort by supporting the HSC team!

Who is running for HSC? Runners from around the country are making a difference for healthy schools! In each newsletter, we'll introduce another member of our team:

Rob Rogers and children hiking Sleeping Bear Dunes. "They have watched me run several marathons and accompany me on their bikes during some of my training runs," said Rob.

Rob Rogers, running the ING New York City Marathon

"People often ask me, ‘Where do you find the time in your busy schedule to train for a marathon?' What they don’t understand is that it’s the benefits of the training which allow me to keep a busy schedule," said return HSC team member Rob Rogers, who is running the ING NYC Marathon as part of the team.

Rob volunteers his time as an HSC board member, working with the staff to develop and implement the campaign's programs. Rob has been especially involved with developing and distributing The Quick & Easy Guide to School Wellness.

“Training for a race forces me to be disciplined in eating, exercising and planning my weekly schedules,” said Rob. “Running, eating well and living a healthy lifestyle gives me the energy to work hard and play hard. Since I started running marathons, my life has become more balanced. As a professional and a volunteer dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children in school, this marathon blends my personal and professional passions and is helping motivate me to cross the finish line.”

Save the Date: Green Clean Schools National Summit
Building coalitions to bring Green Clean Schools laws to every state

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008
8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with reception to follow
1800 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

In 2006, the state of New York passed a law requiring green cleaning in schools. In 2007, Illinois passed a similar law. Now, activists in more than a dozen states are planning to introduce legislation requiring schools to protect the health of students and staff by implementing green cleaning programs.

Please join Healthy Schools Campaign and advocates from around the country for a special Green Clean Schools National Summit, building on this momentum to bring health-promoting green cleaning laws to every state in the nation.

The summit will bring together national organizations, corporate leaders, state-level activists and concerned individuals to develop state-specific strategies with lessons learned from previous successful efforts. Summit attendees will have the opportunity to learn about model legislation, see sample materials, discuss responses to common objections and get updates on policy and product development.

Perhaps most importantly, the summit will connect local activists and national organizations to build strong, effective state-level coalitions.

Are you an activist working to bring a Green Clean Schools law to your state? Please let us know so that we may connect you with other activists and organizations interested in supporting the effort. A limited number of scholarships are available to cover the cost of travel for non-profit advocates. Contact Mark Bishop at 312-419-1810.

Starting the Day Right| by Rochelle Davis
While I was growing up, my mother insisted that we start the day with a healthy breakfast, a habit that has followed me through life. Who knows if the school administrators from three Ohio school districts were as adamant about the value of a healthy breakfast as my mother. But, it was good to see that they are following the advice of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and many other health and education advocates by offering students in their district the opportunity to have breakfast every morning.. . . . Kids Say: Offer Simple, Healthy Alternatives to Violence| by Guillermo Gomez
As part of a social studies project, fifth-grade students at Little Village Academy recommended simple solutions to curbing violent activity in their neighborhood. They thought schools should give students other outlets to socialize and spend their time and energy -- like recess, gym and fun, educational afterschool activities.

It’s More Than Just Recess| by Rochelle Davis
It is amazing how an issue as simple as recess for students is really a part of a complex and serious issue facing our country — the growing disparities in our society. I really appreciated Rosalind Rossi’s story in the Chicago Sun-Times which highlights the disparities that exist in the opportunity for students to have recess. Ms. Rossi found that schools which serve more affluent students are more likely to offer their students recess and other breaks from academic subjects (physical education and fine art) than schools which serve low-income areas.

Location, Location: How a School's Site May Affect Student Performance| by Mark Bishop
One of our fundamental issues at HSC is how health and wellness affect student performance. While much of the work we do falls into an area we consider common sense (eat well, reduce exposures to toxic chemicals, improve acoustics in the classroom, exercise more), we still look to the research to validate our efforts. A new study is beginning that will look at the effects of outdoor air pollution and student performance.

We Heard It ...

"I believe it's time very well spent. We are working with children, not machines."
- Principal Maria Vallejos-Howell on the 10-minute recess she recently instituted at Chicago's Tonti Elementary, as quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times
